The Yao people are known for their Red Detachment of Women costume and traditional Panwang Festival. Women traditionally wear their hair long - some Yao women never cut their hair and wrap it in elaborate coils. Longji villages are authentic Yao communities.

Guilin's karst landscape formed over millions of years as rainwater dissolved limestone bedrock. The same geological process created the caves, underground rivers, and natural bridges. Reed Flute Cave stalactites are estimated to be 450,000 years old.

Guilin means 'Forest of Osmanthus' in Chinese. The city is famous for its osmanthus trees which bloom in autumn, filling the air with sweet fragrance. The osmanthus flower is also used in local cuisine - cakes, tea, and wine.

The ancient technique of fishing with trained cormorants is still practiced on the Li River. Fishermen use bamboo rafts and allow cormorants to dive for fish. A ring around the bird's neck prevents them from swallowing large fish.
